It has been on my mind for a while and today I finally got off my ass and did something about it. I went out and got myself a road bike.
I am totally clueless about bikes. The only experience I had with bikes was in college when I participated in overnight cycling held annually. Back then, I only rode on mountain bikes. So when it comes to road bikes, I am what one would call a noob (newbie for those unfamiliar with gaming terms).
Picking out a bike was surprisingly not that difficult considering my pretty ridiculous criteria. Firstly I wanted a bike with a drop type handlebar. No logical reason whatsoever, just strictly because I feel a road bike looks nice with that. The second criteria is also strictly superficial, it has to be either grey or black without any loud crazy brand stickers. Lastly it has to be within my budget. So basically, cool, cheap grey or black road bike. Easy right?
After unsuccessful stops at three bike shops, I finally found my bike at Performance Bicycle. I pretty much knew I would pick it the moment the guy at the bike shop recommended it to me. But still, I had to try it just to be sure.
It was time to ride the bike! Man, it is true when they say that one can never forget how to ride a bike. What they did not tell you is that your body needs to re-learn all the muscle groups used to ride a bike. Ouch. Of course, It did not help that I am totally out of shape. I quickly and unwillingly got reminded of two crucial parts of the body used for riding: the thigh and the butt.
Everything was almost just too smooth. You know how it is like when moments before you get into an accident, you could almost feel it coming and have it played out in your head. That was exactly what happened. A car zoomed right past me (okay, I am exaggerating) and I basically fumbled and fell out of my bike. How embarrassing. I am fine and in one piece apart from superficial wounds all over, a swollen pinkie and my bruised ego. Okay you can stop laughing now.
It was definitely quite an eventful day and it finished off with a movie I wanted to watch for a long while. I finally caught "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Le Scaphandre et le papillon)". It was a true story adapted from a book that the main character wrote by batting his eye. It was not disappointing at all and was indeed a pretty good movie as recommended.
Glad I finally caught it.
For now, please excuse me while I nurse my wounds and rest my aching butt. It is going to be a really good sleep.
